    Why Should You Replace Your Pillows?

    They are prone to dirt

    Every hour, we shed about dead skin cells, which even occurs as we are asleep. These cells get accumulated in our pillows and sheets. And they are food for dust mites. So, unclean pillows become home to numerous mites which eat and poop right there. Since they are invisible, we think it's okay, making us prone to various health concerns, such as allergy and acne.

    So, to maintain hygiene, it is imperative to wash the covers, replace them every one to two weeks, and wash your pillow every three months. But, before you get into this cleaning spree, always read the instructions when it comes to pillow-washing, as some are not eligible for machine wash, and it can destroy your precious pillows. So, whatever alternative care those pillows require, make sure you mark your calendar!

    However, other factors play a significant role in deciding the timeline of pillow-washing, such as stains, strange smells, experiencing sudden allergy symptoms, or recurring acne. If you notice any of these signs, then it means your pillow needs replacing.

    Losing its shape

    With regular use, your pillow tends to lose its original shape, especially if you are someone who manages to fold or squeeze your pillow as you sleep. So, after a few days or months, your pillow would lose its natural bounciness. And if the pillow is not superior quality-wise, this occurs sooner than later. Here, washing your pillow becomes necessary. Other signs that indicate towards replacing your pillow include;

    • A lumpy, bumpy pillow - When the filling of your pillow gets bunched up in one place, and it's evident that it's chunky or hard and not as comfortable as it used to be, it's time to bid goodbye as your pillow's lifespan has come to an end.
    •  Flat Pillow- A  pillow losing its bounciness happens with time. It is a natural process. So, if you are noticing that your pillow has gone flat, you can do nothing to salvage it. It's time for a new sleep partner, aka pillow, because that's what your neck demands. A comfy sleep companion ensures you don't wake up with neck aches or pains.

    Remember, your pillow must support your neck in a way that you feel relaxed and wake up rejuvenated; otherwise, it’s time to replace your pillows.

    Doesn't deliver the promised comfort

    Maybe once upon a time, the pillow was so comfortable that you would easily drift to sound deep sleep. However, if that's not the case anymore and it's no longer fulfilling its promise, then it means your pillow has reached retirement age. And, it's time to change your pillows with those who match your sleep style.

    Also, it's important to remember that our bodies and preferences keep changing. So, if your old pillow is not something you want and you are looking for something more fluffy or firm, even then, it's time to switch. Comfort is the key, always and your pillow plays a significant role here.

    Pains, aches, and sprains

    Do you wake up with neck pain? Sprained necks? Instead of compromising, get a perfect pillow matching your sleeping position instead of suffering every morning with a sore neck.

    When to Replace Pillows?

    Now you know why you need to replace your pillows periodically. So, let's come back to when you must replace your pillows and how long do pillows last?

    Pillows need a replacement once a year or every two years. Also, change your pillows immediately if you notice the following;

    • You wake up feeling uncomfortable with neck pain or soreness
    • You experience a disturbed sleep cycle because of neck discomfort
    • You are suddenly experiencing headaches and aren't able to fall asleep or stay asleep easily
    • You are facing allergies, such as skin rashes, breathing problems, or itchy throat
    • Your pillow looks very dirty with visible stains or emits a foul odor
    • It's exceptionally lumpy, and you can fold it easily in half

    How to Care for Your Pillows?

    When it comes to caring for your pillow, there is no one-fit-all solution. Each type of pillow comes with its own set of instructions, and it also depends on the type of pillow stuffing. Follow these tips to enhance your pillow's lifeline and keep it hygienic.

    How To Clean Pillow Spills?

    No matter how careful you are, it is possible to end up spilling tea or wine on your pillow. In such situations, opt for the spot cleaning method.

    • First, remove the pillow covers.
    • Use paper towels to remove any excess liquid from the pillow by pressing the towels down on the stain.
    • Now, take some mild detergent and mix it with equal parts of water.
    • Dip a soft sponge in the mixture and rub it on the spill.
    • You can air-dry your pillow or use a hairdryer to get the job done quickly.

    How To Remove Any Odor From Pillow?

    Follow this easy DIY remedy if you think your pillow is smelling odd or not pleasant.

    • Remove the pillow covers and sprinkle baking soda over them.
    • Let it sit in the sun for two to three hours.
    • Finally, vacuum your pillow thoroughly.

    Memory Foam

    You must vacuum your memory foam pillow every time you change the sheets, which should ideally be at least once a week. And every two months, it needs a deep cleaning. But before we proceed, let's talk about things you must never do;

    • Memory foam pillows are not meant for machine wash. Because they have a spongey texture, machine washing them will damage them and leave them soggy. When washing your pillow, make sure you use your hands.
    • Never scrub your pillow. Be gentle.
    • Use mild cleaning agents and nothing harsh.

    How To Wash Your Memory Foam Pillow?

    • Fill a sink or a tub with some lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of mild detergent.
    • Now, submerge your pillow in the tub.
    • Let it sit for a few minutes, and then drain the soap water and refill the tub with clean water.
    • Once your pillow is soap-free, squeeze out the water gently and let it sit under the sun till it dries completely.

    Polyfoam

    To wash a  polyfoam pillow, one must follow the exact instructions as the memory foam pillow. One trick you can use here to make your pillow smell exotic is to add a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender or rose, in the last step.

    When you add clean water back into the tub, you can add a few drops of essential oil. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then gently squeeze the water from the pillow. Once it is dry, your pillow will carry the mild odor of the essential oil, and it will stay for a few days.

    Down/Feather

    Washing your down or feather pillows can reinvigorate them. It keeps them fluffy and fresh.

    • First, remove the covers and inspect for rips because you don't want any filling to escape while washing your pillows.
    • You must wash two pillows at once in the machine to maintain the balance and load your pillows vertically.
    • Use a mild detergent and make sure you don't use a lot of it.
    • Use cold water as hot water can damage the feathers.
    • Always give it an extra rinse to remove any soap residue.
    • Once they are out of the dryer, give it a good fluff.
    • You can gently beat the pillows with your hands before letting them dry so they won't clump.

    Down alternative pillows can be machine washed too.

    Polyester

    You can wash your polyester pillow in a machine.

    • Once you load your pillows into the washer, use mild detergent and rinse it with cold water.
    • You can add wooden balls or clean tennis balls in the sock before putting the pillow in the dryer to avoid clumping.
    • After you are done washing, allow it to dry completely before you use it.

    Latex

    You should never machine wash your latex pillows as it can damage the latex foam. To clean them, you can;

    • Soak a clean towel in soap water and wring it out.
    • Clean the pillow with a damp towel, paying extra attention to any stains.
    • Blot any remaining moisture from the pillow using a dry and clean towel.
    • Air-dry the pillow and use it once it is scorched.

    Latex pillows can take about 24 hours to dry completely.

    Buckwheat

    To clean and wash your buckwheat pillow, you must;

    • Remove the pillow cover and empty the hulls.
    • Let it sit in the open for a couple of hours or even overnight.
    • Wash the pillow covers.
    • Once the covers are dry, fill the hulls, and you can use them again.

    These were some of the easy ways to wash and care for your pillows to keep them hygienic and to ensure it gives you the best night's sleep.
