7 Things I Learned From Sleeping On My Nectar Mattress

I knew I had to eat better and start exercising, but a friend clued me into another game-changer: She recently bought a Nectar mattress and was getting the best sleep of her life. That springboarded her get into getting super-healthy (and she looked great).
Even though I had a hard time believing sleep was that important, she swore by her Nectar mattress, so I decided to try it. I’m glad I did. Since my Nectar mattress arrived, sleeping is my new favorite thing. And I understand how big of an impact sleep has on my overall wellness. Here’s what I learned:
1. ONCE YOU GET GOOD SLEEP, YOU’LL WONDER HOW YOU LIVED WITHOUT IT
I was so used to trying to find the “good spot” on my old mattress and waking up with a sore back, like that was normal. I didn’t realize how bad it was, until I slept on a Nectar and woke up feeling rested and refreshed for the first time in forever. And the cooling mattress cover was added bliss; no more waking up in a sweaty tangle of sheets (because I’d become accustomed to that, too!).
2. NO MATTRESS STANDS A CHANCE AGAINST BAD SLEEP HABITS
Confession: I used to spend every waking moment on Instagram from the time I ate dinner until the hour I zonked out. Yes, I was obsessed. So I made a new rule: No screen time for an hour before bed. I still have withdrawal symptoms and dream of texting in my sleep, or see DMs turn into flesh-eating zombies, but that’s another story. Point is, I’m working on my bad habits.
3. PILLOWS AND SHEETS ARE LIKE BED CANDY
I bought new pillows and sheets in a package deal from Nectar, and now my sleep is even sweeter. Their memory foam pillow beats my feather one because it provides the perfect level of support and softness; you can also remove layers of stuffing till the firmness is just right. And the fair trade, organic cotton sheets feel super cozy and get softer with every wash. Laundry #goals.
4. ROOM TEMPERATURE IS KEY
In my quest for a good night’s sleep, I stumbled upon another major reason I wasn’t well-rested: at 70 degrees, I was keeping my bedroom too warm. Sleep experts advise snoozing in a room that’s 60-67 degrees, because a slight drop in body temperature induces sleep.
5. WEIGHTED BLANKETS LIVE UP TO THE HYPE
Research shows weighted blankets can boost serotonin and melatonin levels, two hormones involved with sleep; that explains why people rave about them. I ignored the fuss until I got an email from Nectar about Blanquil, their weighted blanket. I ordered it, received the blanket, and immediately began sleeping like a happy baby. It feels like a soothing hug (or like being buried in sand). It even stays cool in warm weather, thanks to a removable cover.
6. KEEP WORK OUT OF THE BEDROOM
Another big change I made was not using my bed as a work station. I’d gotten in the habit of sitting in bed grading quizzes – not exactly a soothing ritual. Since I’ve committed to better sleep habits, I now work at my desk and keep the bedroom a sanctuary for rest.
7. BETTER SLEEP CAN LEAD TO OTHER POSITIVE CHANGES
Because I’m now getting a solid seven or eight hours of sleep each night, I feel psyched to make more healthy changes, like doing yoga for 20 minutes every morning, only drinking one cup of coffee daily, and taking a walk outdoors at lunchtime. So far, I’ve lost 10 pounds and feel motivated to keep going. My friend was right: Better sleep has been a kickstarter to a better me.
