How Sleep Deprivation Can Affect Your Work Ability

Posted By Erin on Sep 15, 2017

It’s easy to get stressed out at work. The workaday world never seems to end, with email, twitter, and slack always keeping us occupied. A well-rested employee will make better decisions. They will stay level headed and use their time at work better than their insomniac co-workers.

We’ve covered in previous Nectar blog posts about the effects of sleep on management (spoiler alert: more sleep for a manager not only means better results for them, but also for their employees), but we also thought we’d cover how sleep can affect everyone else at work too. The best comfy mattress can lead to greater productivity.

Recurrence Theory

A new paper in the Harvard Business Review focused on how interpersonal dynamics at work. It looked at how it could be made or broken by quality time on the best comfy mattress. Their theory is that people who are well rested are more emotionally stable. They are less likely to get into yelling fights than their ill-sleeping coworkers. They state it more plainly like this:

We start from the premise that sleep deprivation would make leaders and followers experience more negative emotions at work (in the form of hostility). You can probably easily remember a time in which you had a short night of sleep and had a bit of a short temper at work the next day. This is a very common experience and is largely driven by the fact that sleep deprivation undermines the parts of your brain involved in regulating emotions.

Those negative feelings can turn to grudges. This can put a dent in productivity. There is no real way to measure this.  A well-rested team is a good communicating team. It turns out that this is really born out to the extreme, so much so that many companies are beginning to adopt a nap at work policy. While you may not see the best comfy mattress in the break room anytime soon, more and more management teams are seeing the benefits of a well-rested workforce.
